In an unexpected but not altogether surprising move, CeeLo Green announced today on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that this will be his last season on The Voice. He told Ellen: “I’m not coming back at all…I’m going to continue my relationship with NBC. I have a television show development deal with them as well and hopefully some other talk show opportunities for later in the year. But yeah, I’m going to miss The Voice, too. I’m not coming back, guys.”
You can watch his whole statement to Ellen here – with bonus Lionel Richie!
CeeLo has been a judge since the first cycle, though he’s taken time off before to let R&B star Usher take his place. The show returns next week with Usher in his chair…and it looks like CeeLo will not be filling it again. Like I said, this is unexpected, but not shocking. CeeLo was by far the most original and creative judge, making the occasional oddball song choice to match his oddball contestants (and trust, I say ‘oddball’ with nothing but affection). It makes sense that he wouldn’t want to stay on forever. CeeLo just doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who can stay in one place for too long.
I think what I will miss most about CeeLo is his flair for unique fashion. Not even Christina’s pantsless bustiers covered in sequins can fill that kind of void.
I don’t know what other plans he has in the works with NBC, but I can tell you one thing – I know he will look great doing it. Let’s take a moment to remember some of CeeLo’s most outrageously fabulous looks…
Thank you, CeeLo. You and your weirdo fashion sense will be missed.
