It Was (Mostly) Girls’ Night On The Voice

It occurred to me a few days ago that I haven’t mentioned one male performer in any of my posts about The Voice. I suppose you could consider the vocal duo Dawn and Hawkes, since they are 50% male, but that’s not really what I mean. I wasn’t really impressed by any of the solo male acts thus far…I was thinking it was a girls’ season for sure. If I were Randy Jackson and this was American Idol, I’d definitely be saying, “The girls are IN IT TO WIN IT!” but thankfully I’m not. My point is, the boys were kind of lackluster until last night. Until Josh Kaufman came along and blew the roof of with his rendition of George Michael’s “One More Try.” Chills, I tell you. Chills. Josh chose Team Adam and he’s going kill it.

Other than Josh, it was a total girls’ night for me.  I really liked Cierra Mickens, who chose Team Shakira. I was surprised that she didn’t get a four-chair turn because her performance of Gnarles Barkley’s “Crazy” was crazy good. That is an awesomely difficult song to sing and she nailed it.

Team Blake got the other two standout performances of the night. First, the adorable duo Alaska and Madi, who have been singing together for seven years.  They are total BFFs and, unfortunately, will break up and go off to college separately if The Voice doesn’t work out.  Their voices sounded incredible together and they are so poised and confident for their age. I don’t love most country, but I do love The Civil Wars and these girls were fantastic with “Barton Hollow.”

I was also taken by Ria Eaton, even with that silly jeweled crown thing on her head. I loved her version of “Cups” and I was charmed by her genuinely humble personality. I think she’ll do well with Blake.

Only one more night of Blind Auditions and then it’s off to the battle rounds. Who were your favorites last night?
