I have spent a lot of time complaining about how drawn out things feel this season on The Voice and last night was an excellent example of why – once these solo artists are able to stand on their own and cater to their own strengths and genres, they are so much better! I mean, wow. Last night was really good! I don’t mean to sound so surprised, but there are some contestants that I hadn’t given a second thought to until last night. But now I’m like, whoa buddy, where did you come from?
This week’s playoffs started with Team Shakira and I have to say, she made the right final choices. I was disappointed in Deja Hall, who I actually thought sounded weak in her performance of “Battlefield.” Maybe she needs a couple more years of training before she can handle a song that big. The real standouts to me were Tess Boyer and Dani Moz. I don’t know what to think of Kristen Merlin yet, but I think she’s suffering from a lack of promotion right now. Thankfully, she will go on to the live shows and we can see more of her.
Dani Moz was one of those who really surprised me last night. I was kind of “eh” on her throughout most of the season. She seemed a little phony to me. But her piano-only version of Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” was outstanding. Beautiful and strong and emotional.
Tess Boyer was starting to grow on me, but last night was her big moment in my eyes. Her gorgeous rendition of “Human” gave me goosebumps. I am now officially a Tess Boyer fan.
Next up was Team Adam, who also really surprised me. Kat Perkins sang Journey and it was really good! Christina Grimmie made me enjoy a Jason Mraz song! That has never happened before! I think he made the right decision keeping Delvin and those two ladies, though if you ask me, Delvin didn’t come close. His voice is great, but his performance wasn’t half as dynamic as Kat Perkins.
Did I mention that Christina Grimmie sang Jason Mraz? And I liked it? So weird.
Tonight, we hear from Team Usher, but I think it’s going to be hard for his team to top last night. What do you think?
