Alright Real Housewives of New York City fans: I think it’s time that we talk about Kristen Taekman and her horrid husband, Josh. Now, I know that Kristen is a new member of the RHONY cast and not everyone is a fan. I will admit that I have been back and forth about Kristen myself. On the one hand, I like how down to earth she is about things – there’s no putting on appearances for Kristen. Then again, it’s difficult to take her seriously sometimes, even when I know that she’s struggling to be taken seriously. Like, it was wrong of Ramona to throw a glass in her face, but if I have to hear, “She drew blood!” one more time, I might just throw something myself. It was a cut on your lip, honey, not a scene from Fargo. However, whether you like her or you don’t, I think everyone will agree on one thing: her husband Josh is the worst.
We got our first taste of Josh the douche when he and Kristen participated in the Spartan race – something Kristen clearly did to support her husband (who was probably at the race promoting his energy drink, EBOOST) and not something she actually wanted to do. So of course, he leaves her in the dust. Or, more accurately, the mud. When she told him how she felt, her responded that she man up. Man up, he said, and Kristen should get Wife of the Year for not shoving his smug face right into the mud then and there. But this is clearly a running theme with Josh: he doesn’t take Kristen seriously, either.
Kristen’s duties as a wife and a mother are not challenging in Josh’s eyes. Taking extra care with their daughter, who requires regular physical therapy, is nothing compared to the work he does trying to coordinate an “emerging business.” Like oh, okay, you piece of garbage. Look, I get that he cannot always participate in Kingsley’s therapy – if you legitimately have work, you have work. It happens. But to show up and sit on your phone the whole time, making snide comments at your wife? To do nothing but imply that you’re the one who picks up the slack at home? Ugh. How gross and unsupportive – not to mention a terrible example for Kingsley.
Josh belittles Kristen’s job as a mother. It’s not nearly as hard as “starting an emerging business,” I guess. The thing is – she’s not even a stay-at-home mom. Kristen actually has a job, too. Okay, she’s a model, it’s not like she’s in the coal mines, but it’s still something she does to contribute to that “emerging business,” so he should probably be a little more grateful. Getting older is hard for every woman, but it’s probably twice as hard to lose your identity and career as it happens. Kristen’s days of being a model are nearly over. I guess 37 is like, 90 in model years. So she works hard and lands this workout video gig – something that seemed a little humiliating, if you ask me. Josh – remember, who has no time to show up to therapy – spends the entire day by Kristen’s side. To support her? No, to mock her. I mean, what a pig. He stands there laughing, joking, telling the director that she’ll probably quit soon because it’s too hard (cute) and then asking if they’ll get rid of her pooch. Gross.
I don’t know what will happen between Kristen and Josh for the rest of the season, but I assume they are still together. I have no idea how she puts up with him. Yes, marriage is challenging and every couple goes through hard times, but Josh seems particularly unsupportive, condescending, demeaning and occasionally cruel. It’s obvious that Kristen’s insecurities (“I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I’m pretty!”) only worsen when Josh is around. Someone who makes you feel that bad all the time can’t be good for you, right?
