We’ve been given quite a few teasers for the upcoming season of American Horror Story: Freak Show, and now we have the official, full-length trailer to enjoy as well. Feast your eyes on this terrifying big top, which includes: Kathy Bates getting her beard trimmed, a three-breasted Angela Bassett, Michael Chiklis as a strongman, Evan Peters and his claw-like hands, Sarah Paulson and…Sarah Paulson as conjoined twins and, of course, Jessica Lange, as the ringmaster of the freak show.
In an interview this week with Entertainment Weekly, creator Ryan Murphy and the cast revealed some plot points for the upcoming season. At the heart of the show is Jessica Lange, who plays a German ex-pat and former cabaret star named Elsa Mars. Elsa is trying to breathe new life into her waning show when we meet her in Jupiter, Florida. She’s trying to recruit Bette and Dot (Paulson), conjoined twins with very different personalities. Alongside Elsa is Ethel, her bearded BFF, played by Kathy Bates. Ethel is dealing with the return of her ex-husband (Chiklis) and his new wife, the tri-boobed Bassett. Ethel’s son will be played by Evan Peters, who has “lobster-like hands.”
Though he’s not featured in the trailer, the scariest character of the season will be Twisty the Clown, played by John Carroll Lynch. Twisty is a clown who’s retired in Jupiter and isn’t very pleased about the arrival of Elsa and her show. Murphy says:
“He’s out to make their lives a living hell. He’s wearing a mask on the lower part of his face and there comes a point in the season where takes the mask off and when you see what’s under you will faint in terror.”
Other notable details about AHS: Freak Show:
- AHS alums Denis O’Hare and Emma Roberts will play a set of con artists. I’m excited about this, because the two of them had great chemistry on AHS: Coven.
- Gabourey Sidibe will play a socialite whose mother has gone missing. Oh, and her mother? She’ll be played by none other than Patti freaking LaBelle. I guess if you’ve already had Patti Lupone on your show, it’s time to have Patti LaBelle on, too.
- Wes Bentley (of The Hunger Games – or if you’re old like me, of American Beauty) will star in the special two-part Halloween episode. He’ll play real-life horror-show myth Edward Mordake, who was said to have two faces – one normal face and one small face on the back of his head, which forced him to do evil things. Uh, creepy.
- Oh, and Pepper is back. Yes, Pepper! If this is the Pepper backstory we never got in Asylum, I am so psyched.
We have a little less than four weeks until the freak show begins on October 8.
