Real Housewives Of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice and her husband Joe Giudice may finally learn that crime doesn’t pay. After being charged in a 39-count indictment (including conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, bank fraud, bankruptcy fraud and making false statements on loan applications) the two have been sentenced to serve jail time.
The couple originally plead not guilty to the charges, but then changed their plea to guilty back in March. Today the judge ruled that Teresa will serve 15 months in jail, while her husband Joe will serve 41. She also had some harsh words today during Teresa’s sentencing:
“For a moment I thought about probation … but I think a period of confinement is absolutely necessary in this case…I don’t honestly believe that you understand or respect the law. I need to send a message. In the eyes of the law, it doesn’t matter who you are. There are consequences to pay.”
Ouch. However, Judge Esther Salas did have some empathy to offer the pair of criminals. She noted that Teresa is a “devoted mother,” and ruled that the couple will serve their sentences separately so they don’t leave their four daughters without a parent. Teresa will surrender January 5, and then Joe will serve his time once her 15 months are complete. Joe Giudice still faces possible deportation charges once his sentence is up.
In addition to their jail time, both Teresa and Joe received two years probation and they will have to pay $414,000 in restitution, plus $10,000 in fines. Joe has also been recommended for an alcohol treatment program. Basically, they had a really, really bad day.
In a statement before his sentencing, “Juicy” Joe had this to say:
“I stand here humiliated. I disgraced many people, including my wife and my four daughters. I take full responsibility for my actions. I promise to be a better person.”
Bravo will air a special episode of Watch What Happens Live with Teresa and Joe on October 6. Andy Cohen will conduct their first public interview since their sentencing.
