Things are really picking up on The Flash lately. Not only do we have the upcoming Flash vs. Arrow crossover event (!!!) but on December 9, we’ll have “The Man In The Yellow Suit” appearing as an actual man – not just a beam of light There are many spoilers coming up (both comic and TV show) so consider yourself warned – read ahead at your own risk.
In “The Man In The Yellow Suit,” Barry Allen will come face to face with the man who murdered his mother. Of course, we’ve met this guy before. In a previous episode, we saw Joe West get threatened by the same yellow light that we see in Barry’s childhood memories. We now know (as confirmed by the show in an interview with EW) that this is Reverse Flash, a villain I’ve discussed before as a possible identity of Harrison Wells. Of course, that’s all just conjecture. There’s another fully likely theory as well – in fact, it may be a little too likely to be the case.
Iris West’s boyfriend on the show, Eddie Thawne, has a name quite similar to the comic version of Reverse Flash, Eobard Thawne, AKA Professor Zoom. In the comics, Eobard Thawne kills Barry’s mother, so it doesn’t seem to be a stretch to assume that Eddie is secretly an evil time-travelling beam of yellow light. You know, not a stretch for comics, anyway. But is it too obvious? Grant Gustin seems to think so. He told EW:
“I didn’t even remotely see coming what Andrew Kreisberg told me is going to be one of the turning points with [the Reverse Flash] storyline. I’ve heard so many theories surrounding Reverse Flash that are all interesting. I was like, ‘Oh, I know what’s going on,’ but literally no one knows what’s going on. Anyone who thinks they know what’s going on is wrong. I’m in the in and I thought I knew, but Andrew told me and I was like, ‘Holy crap.’”
So…maybe it’s not Eddie? But does that make it Wells, or someone else entirely? In last week’s episode, Harrison Wells was pretty honest about his investment in Barry. “My most important creation is The Flash. Barry Allen must have a future,” he told Cisco – rather creepily, I might add. It doesn’t make sense, then, that he’d go head to head in what promises to be a viscous battle between Reverse Flash and Barry. But if it’s not Wells or Eddie, who could it be?
