Full disclosure: I have no idea who Zendaya is, or what she is famous for. A quick trip to Wikipedia tells me that she is a singer/dancer/model/actress known for some Disney Channel originals. I also see that she’s still a teenager. Okay, now I know. I am probably not her target audience, so I don’t feel bad about being ignorant of her work – but now I am glad that I know who she is. Why? Because Zendaya Coleman stuck it to E! host Giuliana Rancic so hard, and she was damn eloquent while doing so.
As you can see from the photo above, Zendaya sported dreadlocks at the Oscars earlier this week. As you can also see, she looked amazing. But Giuliana Rancic, piece of fame whoring garbage that she is, had other opinions. On the E!’s Fashion Police Oscars special, she criticized Zendaya’s ‘do, saying that it looked like she smelled of patchouli oil or weed. Yeah, she seriously said that. Seriously. Like, out loud.
To me, Zendaya looks like a beautiful, biracial young woman who wears natural hair with pride. I mean, it’s not often you see natural hair on the red carpet, period, let alone dreadlocks. Zendaya even cited Lisa Bonet, who is famous for her long ‘locs, as an inspiration. But I guess to Giuliana Rancic, squawking imbecile, she just looked like a racial stereotype.
This is the part where Zendaya sticks it to her. Enjoy.
Rancic has since apologized-but-not-really-apologized for her xenophobic comments.
Well, it’s a good thing that “boho chic” isn’t a form of cultural appropriation, huh? The sad thing is, I don’t think Rancic actually meant to be racist – I think she just naturally associates dreadlocks with these stereotypes. Which is, you know, kinda racist.
