Three Looming Questions From Pretty Little Liars “Bloody Hell”

We only have three weeks left until the season finale of Pretty Little Liars , when we will finally discover the identity of A (again)! After last week’s episode, which gave us Mike’s massive Mona confession, you’d think the show would expound on her murder. But nope, who am I kidding? It’s just more mysteries, coming at us from every direction – even on international flights. A lot of crazy stuff went down this week, but here are my three biggest looming questions.

1. How is someone harassing Alison in prison? I’m not a prison expert, but I do know that it takes a solid amount of effort to sneak things into a jail cell. It’s also pretty impossible for a free civilian to wander back into the prison’s laundry room. So, how is Ali getting harassed while she’s locked up? When she doodles Mona’s name into the (incredibly dusty) table of the laundry room, she later finds the words “TOLD EVERYTHING” written underneath. At night, a small canister rolls into her cell. Inside is a little Ali-shaped doll and a note: You’re already over a barrel. Wanna be in one, too? – A. There meaning here is pretty obvious – it’s a reference to where Mona ended up and it’s creepy as hell. But it doesn’t explain how it got there in the first place. Is someone who is also locked up working for A? Is one of the guards working for A? Honestly, just how much money and power does A have?

2. Who is Varjack? Or, rather, Varjak, as that’s the correct way to spell the character from Breakfast At Tiffany‘s. After getting horribly injured in what appears to be an accident – but is most definitely an A-ccident – Cyrus Petrillo (AKA Hank Maroney) is stuck in the hospital’s burn unit. He looks pretty bad and can barely speak when Hanna and Aria go to visit him. They want information on A’s location, but all Cyrus can do is scribble a note. At first they think it says “carjack,” but eventually realize that the C is a V – for Varja(c)k. So who is Varjak? Is that an alias for A or another member of A’s team? Is this Varjak the person who comes to kill Cyrus in the hospital – and did he succeed?

3. What makes Mrs. Hastings keep Spencer in England? After hearing that Spencer, along with Aria and Emily, went to see Alison in jail, Veronica Hastings is one unhappy mama. After all, her daughter did just escape a murder charge herself. She probably doesn’t like Spencer lurking around jails with other murder suspects. When Spencer won’t give her any details, Mrs. Hastings ships her off for an interview at Oxford and goes to see Alison herself. She doesn’t seem to believe in Ali’s innocence, but she does agree to help Ali with her testimony – which gives her full access to the case file. At the end of the episode, Mrs. Hastings sees something disturbing (unseen to us, natch) in this file. She tells Spencer to stay put and do not return to Rosewood. Uh oh. What did she find?

As one of the Liars said (I think it was Emily?) A really does seem to be tying up loose ends, and in a way more sinister than ever before. Mona is dead and now possibly Cyrus has been murdered as well. Mike’s weights were sabotaged to collapse on him, which Sexy Tutor Andrew points out would’ve crushed his skull. This isn’t just harassment or burying secrets – this is a killing spree. I’m pretty worried about our girls.

  1. For point 1, what if Toby is A (or has some other sketchy issues) – it’d be easy for a police to get into prison. And we’ve seen Toby go to visit Alison before. (And he’s been questionable lately)

    2) I think Varjak is Ezra. In the movie/book Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the characger Paul Varjak is a writer who falls for the flighty Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn’s character). Ali says that Ezra tells her she reminds him of Holly Golightly, and she has an ID with the name Holly Varjak. Oh, and of course, Varjak and Ezra are both writers. So there’s that. His whole lair thing was too much for just someone researching a novel. We let Ezra off the hook too easy before, IMO.

    • Oh man, I’m such an idiot. It would be easy for police or detectives to get in there! But I don’t think it’s Toby…maybe Tanner is A.

As for Varjak, yeah, I thought about Ezra and his weird Holly Golightly thing. I don’t want it to be him, because I’ll feel ripped off, but I agree – he was let off waaaay too easy!

      • I think it’s Toby only because he has actual motive to hate the liars as much as he does. Ali sent him to juvi, they all had a hand in blinding his step sister, Jenna, and he’s been around since the beginning. Not to mention, no one is suspecting him. When people on the show aren’t suspecting that person/the show isn’t dropping major hints, I think that’s when we should pay attention to them (this show lovessss misdirection!)

  2. Very well written post. At this point Im very convinced that A is ezra. I was skeptical of it at first but after the breakfast at tiffany’s clue I have no doubt in my mind. As far as the A team goes I feel its probably the boys, Toby, Wren, and maybe Caleb. I used to think it was one of the girls like Aria or Hanna on the team too but not now that A has threatened them as much as he has now. I think Melissa and Mona used to be on the A team but only because he threatened them and once they rebelled he hurt them.
