Long gone are the days of soapy teen dramas like Gossip Girl and 90210 – The CW has a new network strategy and that strategy is All Superheroes All The Time. Deadline announced yesterday that The CW has a spin-off series in the works starring a collection of characters from The Flash and Arrow. It’s like the network found a formula that won’t fail and by God, they’re going to stick with it. I imagine meetings at The CW go something like this:
You get a superhero show! And you get a superhero show!
Eeeeeverybody gets a superhero shoooooooow!!
Right now, the unnamed series is set to star Brandon Routh, Victor Garber, Wentworth Miller and Caity Lotz. Routh, Garber and Miller will be reprising their roles as Ray Palmer/Atom, Dr. Martin Stein/Firestorm and Leonard Snart/Captain Cold, respectively. As for Caity Lotz, no one is really sure if she will be playing Sara Lance/Canary since, you know, they killed her off on Arrow earlier this season. Her sister Laurel now (poorly) attempts to carry the torch as Black Canary. Perhaps it will be a prequel, or maybe they will finally make use of that whole Lazarus Pit thing.
Deadline also reports that the new show will include “three major DC Comics characters who have never appeared in a TV series.” So that rules out everyone on Gotham, right? That means no Batman, no Catwoman, no Joker, no Harvey Dent…no Riddler, Poison Ivy, or Penguin…the list goes on. Unless they’re going on the technicality that no one on Gotham has actually become these characters yet. Hmm. Tough call. I’m also wondering about the absence of other likely characters, such as Heat Wave from The Flash and Arrow‘s Huntress. Maybe their names will pop up soon.
Despite the lack of details, I am still pretty excited about the idea of this show. Mostly, I am excited at the prospect of Caity Lotz reprising her role as Canary. She was so awesome and I was pretty annoyed when they killed her off. I am also glad that The CW decided to expand on their original idea of an Atom spin-off. Brandon Routh is nice to look at, but I don’t think he has the charisma to carry an entire show.
What do you think? Are you excited about another superhero show or are you sick of the trend? What do you think the show will be about, and what could it be called? Might I suggest calling the new show….Flarrow??? Just a thought.
