3 Trends I’m Into Right Now (And One Two I’m Not)

I follow a lot of fashion and beauty accounts on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. It’s basically a whole lot of frivolity–frankly, I need the break between actual news updates that tend to make me feel like I’m living in an endless dumpster fire of misogyny and racism. But yes, fashion! Beauty! I am not terribly adventurous when it comes to fashion or makeup, mostly because I feel a little too old to get away with it* and also, my work environment is very conservative (technically, we don’t have a dress code, but I’m not in a position where I could get away with purple highlights or black lipstick). I know I’m not supposed to think I’m “too old” for any particular style and age ain’t nothin’ but a number and all that–but it’s how I feel. Not about other people so much as for myself.

Anyhow, my point is that I don’t try a lot of the new trends I see out there, but every once in a while I’ll catch a trend that I love. Here are some that I am loving, plus a few that I wish would go away.

I’m into: 90s-inspired brown lipstick

I am a legit 90s girl (Class of ’98, baby! Oh god, that was 20 years ago, I want to die). Growing up, I wanted nothing more than to look as cool and chic as Brenda and Kelly on Beverly Hills, 90210. Unlike many other, more regrettable trends from the 90s that have come back in style (bodysuits, anyone?) I am not mad about brown lipstick. I recently bought this Rimmel Lasting Lipstick in Nude 48, which works well as a subtle brown nude. My BFF also got me this badass Tarte Cosmetics Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint in Wannabe, which is a lot bolder. I haven’t had the guts to wear it yet, but I’m obsessed.

I’m into: Sock booties

Despite living in South Florida, I love boots. I also have very tiny feet with skinny little ankles, which tend to look silly in clunky booties. That’s why I love sock booties–they’re sleek and dressy enough for work, but look great with a pair of jeans, too. I just bought the Naturalizer Rebecca Bootie (pictured above) which are super comfortable and about $470 cheaper than the gorgeous and ridiculously priced Stuart Weitzman Clinger Stretch Booties.

I’m into: Crossbody camera bags

I will admit that I am a huge bag lady. The bigger the tote, the better. And while I will never be the kind of person who can grab a clutch and go, a camera bag is the perfect in-between size. I have a few, including the French Connection gold and pink crossbody bag pictured above (I am not sure where you can buy this one, since I got it through Le Tote).

I’m not into: Cut-out tops

WHAT IS THIS??? Can someone please explain to me why we need to cut out the front of our shirts? I cannot fathom a scenario where I would want to wear something like this, ever, unless someone was like, “Hey Shelly, I will give you three million dollars if you where this stupid cut-out top.” I just…you know? WHY.

What styles are you loving (or hating) right now?
